Whether it is your first time getting a pet or not, deciding what pet to get can be a difficult decision especially if you are an animal lover in general. Not having a preference can be good because you have more options to choose from – a fish, a turtle, a rabbit, a bird, a guinea pig, but you can also just limit your choice to the two most common household pets – a cat or a dog. All you have to do is weigh in on the pros and cons of having any of the two and then eventually, you will know whether you are a cat person or a dog person.
Probably, most of the people that you know would suggest for you to get a dog because as they say, dogs are man’s best friend. While that may be true, you also have to take into consideration a lot of things. Dogs are very active animals, they love to run, jump, skip, and play around the house so expect a mess when you come home from the office especially if you left things where your dog can easily reach them. Also, dogs need to be walked around and that is one of the things that they look forward to. They love attention and would need you to spend some time with them after you have been gone for a few hours. If you think that you do not have the time to do it and that you cannot find someone else to do it for you, then a dog may not be the pet for you.
If you are more of a laidback person, you are most likely a cat person. Cats are known to be independent animals and can be left alone for a longer period of time without you worrying about coming home to your things already scattered on the floor. Of course, you just have to make sure that they are left with enough food and water to keep them fed and hydrated for the day. They also need to bond and spend some quality time with you but they are not as demanding as dogs. You can be a couch potato and your cat can do the same. Cats play too but your involvement is less tiring because they will do the running and jumping. They also do not need to be walked.
When it comes to space, cats are also best for people who have limited space at home. You just need a location where you can set up its sleeping and feeding area and another location for its litter box and you are all set. Cats are usually quiet and they are not known to leave a mess. You just have to train them how to use the litter box and you do not have to worry about leading them outdoors to do their thing.
Lastly, maintaining a cat is cheaper than a dog when it comes to grooming, food, toys, and other supplies. So, looking at these reasons, the next time that you visit a pet store, you might want to consider getting yourself a new feline friend or even make it two just because two cats are better than one.
