If there is one thing that we are always mindful of, it is the food that we eat. If you are concerned about the type of food that you consume, you should also be mindful of the type of food that you give to your pet cat. Cats should not be given all food that humans love to eat. There are specific types of human food that can be given to cats but there are also some that can be harmful to them so as a responsible pet owner, it is your obligation to know which ones are good and which are bad. Just because your pet cat is looking longingly at the chocolate bar you are devouring, it does not mean that you should give some to it. The welfare of your cat should be at the top of your priorities since you have committed to take care of it when you decided to bring it home and feeding it right with a healthy diet is one of the things that you should focus on.
First, you should know the basics. Cats are carnivorous animals and they need to eat a lot of meat for protein and for fat. To be more specific, their bodies require animal-based protein instead of plant-based protein. Cats cannot make the missing pieces of a full amino acid profile found in an animal-based protein if they are only fed plant-based protein. Others may think that since both cats and dogs are pet animals, they can eat the same food and yield the same results. Well, they are mistaken. Dog foods are often loaded with carbohydrates, and cats cannot process carbohydrates very well like dogs do. Therefore, feeding your cat with dog food is not only a waste of money, it also poses as a health hazard to your pet cat because it does not meet its nutritional requirements.
Now you already know that cats need more protein and fat and less carbohydrates, the next thing you should know is that the recommended feeding for your pet is canned food instead of a dry kibble. There may be times when you don’t feel like going to the store to buy some groceries, you can simple prepare a balanced homemade diet for your feline companion. As much as possible, avoid feeding your pet cat dry food because not only is it too low on water content obviously, most often than not, your dry food is high on carbohydrates. Not to mention that it may very well be contaminated with bacteria, cockroaches and their eggs, storage mites, and many more. Having to undergo high temperatures for a long period of time may cause the destruction of nutrients in dry food.
Lastly, cats do not have a very strong thirst drive. Compared to other species, you would seldom see cats drink water. So how do cats fulfill their need for water? They do it through their diet. A cat’s normal prey is composed of 70% water, and canned foods are found to contain around 78% of water. Therefore, canned foods are hitting two birds with one stone. Not only is it better suited to meet its water needs, it is also a much closer approximate of the natural diet of the cat.
